Do roofs need to be vented? A non-ventilated roof can cause extremely hot roof spaces, where the heat builds up and eventually causes damage to the wood framing, rafters, underlayment and more. Ensuring your roof is evenly and properly ventilated helps that air to escape and extends the lifetime of your roofing system and roof insulation.
Generally, a roof needs one vent every 100 square metres. As well as this, you should allow four eave vents per roof vent to allow sufficient air circulation (air exhausted by the vents will be replaced by fresh air outside).
Most metal roofs have a gap between the roof sheet and facia helping your roof vent draw fresh air into your roof cavity while your roof vent draws the hot/bad air out of your roof cavity. However some roofs might not have this gap if there has been insulation installed too close to the eaves and facia. Roof vents just by themselves do work But they do work better with eave vents to let cooler air in as the hot air is expelled through the roof vent. This helps keep a constant cycle of fresh air flow threw your roof preventing stale air and mold.

Everyone has complained about a noisy whirlybird at some point. A functioning whirlybird is quiet, so if it’s making noise, it’s most likely broken. Usually this is the result of the whirlybird being bent or the bearings being worn out.
Some of the cheaper imported whirlybirds are notorious for this problem. For that reason, we recommend the Bradford Windmaster DTC range for its 15 years warranty and Cyclone Rating.
Whirlybirds are designed to spin in even in the lightest winds. Whirlybirds extract hot air via two ways; convection and creating a vacuum. The vacuum potential is driven by the wind speed and drawing heat out of the roof space. The stronger the wind, the more powerful the extraction. As hot air rises through convection currents, it can still escape no matter the wind speed.
